Quiet Watch Winders
No winder is silent. A motor turning a gear train makes sound, and any listing that claims otherwise is describing a marketing position rather than a measurement.
What we can tell you is which motor is inside. The walnut range and the Harcourt use a Japanese Mabuchi A+ grade motor with a roller bearing and pure copper windings, and the Marlow a Mabuchi motor too; the Hadley and the Belgrave run a Japanese motor whose maker we have not been able to name, and we say so rather than borrow a name. The motor is the single largest factor in how a winder sounds, and the one that budget cabinets leave unnamed. Every winder we sell rests between winding cycles rather than turning all day.
We are measuring noise on our own samples, with a meter, at one metre. The figures will be published on the product pages when they are in. Until then we name the motor rather than guess at a number.
The three things people worry about
“Will it keep me up at night?”
The motor sits in the base or behind the rotor, and every programme turns for one or two minutes, then rests for several minutes. We are measuring ours with a meter at one metre and will publish the figure rather than write “silent”. If it is louder than you expected, the 30-day return covers that too.
“The motor will die after a year.”
The failure people describe on every forum, at every price. It is why the walnut and Harcourt pages name their motor, a Japanese Mabuchi A+ with copper windings and overheat protection and why every other page tells you how its motor rests. If anything is wrong when it arrives, we repair, replace or refund, and we pay the postage.
“Will it magnetise or overwind my watch?”
The motor sits in the base or behind the rotor, the watch rests on the cushion, and the field does not reach the movement. Overwinding is not possible: an automatic’s mainspring slips once fully tensioned. The long answer is here.
