How many watches do you rotate through?

Not the ones you own: the ones that come off your wrist and go back on within the week. That number is the winder you need. Pick it and choose the range inside.

The three things people worry about

We read the forums too. These are the questions that stop a purchase, answered the way we would answer them by email.

“Will it keep me up at night?”

The motor sits in the base or behind the rotor, and every programme turns for one or two minutes, then rests for several minutes, so most of the night it is not turning. We are measuring ours with a meter at one metre and will publish the figure rather than write “silent”. If it is louder than you expected on your bedside table, the 30-day return covers that too.

“The motor will die after a year.”

That is the failure people describe on every forum, at every price. It is why the walnut and Harcourt pages name their motor, a Japanese Mabuchi A+ with copper windings, a roller bearing and overheat protection and why every other page tells you how its motor rests. If anything is wrong when it arrives, we repair, replace or refund, and we pay the postage.

“Will it magnetise or overwind my watch?”

Every electric motor has magnets; what matters is distance. Ours sits in the base or behind the rotor, the watch rests on the cushion, and the field does not reach the movement. Overwinding is not possible: an automatic’s mainspring slips once it is fully tensioned. Set the turns per day to your calibre and the winder simply keeps it topped up. The long answer is here.

Where the money goes

What £99.90 buys, next to £275 and £50

The motor and the settings decide whether a winder is still running in three years. Here is how ours line up against the two things you will see next to it in search results.

How it works

What a watch winder actually does

And, honestly, when you do not need one: if you wear the same automatic every day, a winder adds nothing. We would rather say so than take the order and deal with the return.

01

It turns the watch when your wrist is not

So the mainspring stays under tension and the watch is running, dated and roughly on time when you pick it up. It does not service a watch and it will not repair one.

02

You choose the turns per day

Every movement has a number it wants, most between 650 and 800 a day. On the walnut and Harcourt ranges, each rotor from the two-watch up has its own dial for 650, 750, 850, 1,000 or 1,900 turns a day and runs clockwise, anticlockwise or alternating. The Belgrave sets 650 to 1,950 per rotor from its touch panel. The Whitmore, Hadley and Marlow run four fixed programmes on one dial instead.

03

It runs from a USB socket you already own

A USB cable is in the box of every walnut, PU-leather and Marlow winder. Any phone charger or power bank drives it, so there is no region-specific plug and nothing to buy. The Belgrave cabinets are the exception: their mains adapter is in the box.

Setting it up

The right setting for your watch, before you order

Every automatic has a figure its maker publishes. Start from the lowest that keeps the watch running: less turning, less wear, and a watch that is still on time on Monday. These are the usual starting points. If yours is not here, send us the reference and we reply with the setting.

Starting points published by the movement makers and winder databases; your watch’s own manual wins if it says otherwise. On the walnut and Harcourt ranges every rotor from the two-watch up covers 650 to 1,900 turns a day, the Belgrave 650 to 1,950, in either direction or alternating.

Buying it for someone

A gift that can come back if it misses

A winder is often opened by someone who did not choose it. So the return window is thirty days from delivery, the label is prepaid, and the invoice never goes in the box. Most gifts land on the one-watch Hadley, in stitched PU leather in black, blue or brown, with a USB-C socket, or the walnut Whitmore at £99.90. UK VAT and delivery included on both.

  • Free 30-day returns from delivery, prepaid label, no questions
  • No invoice in the parcel if you email us your order number
  • Runs from any USB charger, so it works on the morning it is opened
  • Fits the vast majority of automatics without adjustment

Watch winders, explained

Automatic watch winders for the UK, from one watch to nine

A watch winder keeps an automatic watch running when it is not on your wrist. The rotor inside your watch is turned by your movement; on a winder, a motor turns the whole watch instead, so the mainspring stays wound and the watch is on time, dated and ready the moment you pick it up. If you rotate between two or more automatics, or own a watch with a perpetual calendar or moon phase that is tedious to reset, a winder earns its place on the dresser.

Stillwood lists fourteen winders for the UK in four ranges: the Whitmore, Camborne, Kingsley and Ravenscourt in genuine black walnut veneer, for one to six watches; the Hadley and Harcourt in stitched PU leather, from a one-watch cube in three colours to a six-watch cabinet; the low, wide Marlow in black or lacquered green; and the Belgrave cabinets, set from a touchscreen or the remote, for two to nine watches.

Every Stillwood winder rests between winding cycles. On the walnut and Harcourt ranges, each rotor from the two-watch up has its own turns-per-day dial, 650 to 1,900, and its own direction, so a Rolex, an Omega and a Seiko can share one cabinet and each get the setting its movement asks for; the Belgrave sets 650 to 1,950 per rotor from its touch panel, and the Hadley and Marlow run four programmes. The cushions fit the vast majority of automatic watches without adjustment.

Not sure which size or setting you need? Our guides cover how many rotors to buy, turns per day, whether a winder will fit your watch and whether you need one at all. Every winder ships tracked across the United Kingdom with UK VAT included and free 30-day returns.

Questions

The questions we get most

How do I know which size I need?

Count the automatics you actually rotate through, not the ones you own. A watch you wear every day does not need a winder, and one you wear twice a year is quicker to set by hand. Most people land on two or four.

Will it fit my watch?

Every Stillwood winder has a 360° elastic memory-foam cushion that adapts to almost any case size or strap length, so it fits the vast majority of automatic watches without adjustment. For a very large case or a short strap, email us the reference before you order.

How long does delivery take, and what does it cost?

Free everywhere in the United Kingdom, 5 to 8 business days from the day you order, tracked, with a tracking number emailed when it ships. All UK taxes are in the price; nothing is due to the courier.

What if I change my mind?

Send it back within 30 days for a full refund and we pay the postage: we email you a prepaid label. That sits on top of your legal 14-day right to cancel, which nothing here reduces.

Do I need mains power?

Not for the walnut, PU-leather and Marlow ranges: a USB cable is included and works from any USB adapter or power bank you already own, so no region-specific plug is needed. The Belgrave cabinets come with their own mains adapter.
