Will a Watch Winder Fit My Watch? Cushions, Straps and 44 mm Cases

13 August 2026 · Stillwood

Almost certainly, yes. Every Stillwood winder uses removable cushions. On the walnut and Harcourt ranges they hold cases from roughly 38 mm to 46 mm, on leather, rubber, steel or a bracelet; the Marlow takes cases up to 50 mm. For the Hadley and the Belgrave, email us the reference and we check. That covers the great majority of automatic watches, including 44 mm divers. If you own something unusual, email us at hello@stillwood.uk before you order and we will tell you honestly.

What actually determines whether a watch fits a winder?

Not the case diameter, which is the figure most people check first. What matters is the circumference of the closed strap or bracelet, because the watch has to sit around the cushion with enough tension to stay put when the cushion rotates. A 44 mm diver on a generously sized bracelet can be easier to fit than a 38 mm dress watch on a short, stiff strap.

This is why the cushion matters more than published case ranges. A fixed-width cushion only suits one size of opening. A soft cushion compresses under a tight strap and expands into a loose one, so a single rotor can hold a slim dress watch one week and a bracelet diver the next.

Will a 44 mm watch fit a Stillwood winder?

Yes. The stated range on the walnut and Harcourt winders is roughly 38 mm to 46 mm, so a 44 mm case sits comfortably within it. Large divers are usually the easiest watches to fit, because they tend to come on bracelets or rubber straps with plenty of adjustment. The thing to check on a big watch is not the diameter but the height: a very thick case on a tall cushion needs enough clearance inside the winder for the glass door to close. Our cases are built with that clearance, but if you own something exceptionally deep it is worth asking before you order.

Do lug width and lug-to-lug distance matter?

Lug width has almost no effect on winder fit. It determines which strap the watch takes, and only indirectly the strap's bulk. Lug-to-lug distance matters slightly more, because a watch with long lugs sits higher off the cushion and can feel less stable, but in practice a properly tensioned strap holds it in place regardless.

The measurement worth taking, if you want to be thorough, is the internal circumference of the strap when it is fastened at the hole you normally use. If that closed loop is roughly the size of a small fist, it will fit a sprung cushion without difficulty.

How tight should a watch be on the cushion?

Snug, not strained. The correct fit has these characteristics:

  • The watch does not slide along the cushion when you tilt the rotor by hand.
  • The strap is not stretched to the point where the leather is deformed or the buckle is under obvious tension.
  • The case sits flat against the cushion rather than perched on one edge.
  • The door closes without touching the watch.

If a watch is too loose it can creep round the cushion and, at worst, work its way off. If it is too tight you will mark the strap over time. Both are fixed by compressing the cushion slightly as you slide the watch on, then letting it expand into the strap.

What about very small or very large watches?

Watch Fit on a Stillwood winder
36 to 38 mm dress watch At the small end. Usually fine, especially on a leather strap fastened tightly.
39 to 42 mm everyday watch Straightforward.
43 to 46 mm diver or pilot Straightforward, including on a steel bracelet.
Above 46 mm Ask us first.
Very short or non-adjustable strap Ask us first. The strap, not the case, is the limit.

Watches smaller than about 34 mm, and rigid bangle-style bracelets that do not open to a round shape, are the two cases where we would rather have the conversation before you buy than after.

Can I fit a bracelet watch without resizing it?

Usually yes. A steel bracelet closes to a fixed circumference, and if that circumference is comfortable on your wrist it is generally comfortable on a cushion. If your bracelet is sized very small, the sprung cushion compresses to meet it. If it is sized very large, the cushion expands, though a very loose bracelet is the one situation where a watch may shift during rotation. In that case remove a link, or move the watch to a rotor where you can tension it better.

Does the number of rotors change what fits?

No. Within the walnut range the cushions are the same design, so the single-rotor Whitmore holds exactly what the six-rotor Ravenscourt holds. What changes with capacity is the space between watches and the overall footprint. If you are running several large divers together, a unit with more room per rotor is more comfortable to load.

Where footprint is the constraint rather than fit, the compact Camborne holds the same range of watches on a smaller base. Where you prefer a softer, tailored finish, the Harcourt 4-Slot in premium PU leather offers the same fit in a different material.

What if my watch does not fit after all?

Every Stillwood piece comes with free 30-day returns, so a winder that does not suit your watch can go back. We would still rather you asked first. Send us the make, model and strap type at hello@stillwood.uk and we will give you a straight answer, including if the answer is that our winder is not the right thing for that watch. Before you order anything, it is also worth reading whether you need a winder at all, because for a single watch worn most days the honest answer is usually no.

Frequently asked questions

What size watches fit in a Stillwood watch winder?

On the walnut and Harcourt ranges the cushions hold cases from roughly 38 mm to 46 mm, on leather, rubber, steel or a bracelet; the Marlow takes cases up to 50 mm. For the Hadley and the Belgrave, email us the reference. Watches slightly outside that range often still fit, because the limiting factor is the closed circumference of the strap rather than the case diameter.

Will a watch winder fit a 44 mm diver on a steel bracelet?

Yes. A 44 mm case sits well within the stated range, and steel bracelets usually offer enough adjustment to tension properly on the cushion. Check that the bracelet is not sized so large that the watch can shift during rotation.

Are the cushions removable?

Yes, on every winder in the range. Removing the cushion makes it easier to fit a tight strap, because you can put the watch on the cushion in your hand and then return both to the rotor.

How long does delivery take?
