A watch winder is quiet when it uses a good motor, when the case damps rather than amplifies what the motor does, and when it spends most of the day switched off between winding cycles. No winder is silent, because a motor turning a gear train makes sound. Any listing that says otherwise is describing a marketing position rather than a measurement.
Why is no watch winder truly silent?
Because something has to move. A winder contains an electric motor driving a reduction gearbox, which turns a cushion carrying a watch that weighs something. Every one of those stages produces sound: the motor's own whine, the meshing of the gears, and the low rumble of the rotor changing direction. Good engineering reduces each of them. None of them goes to zero.
"Silent" is used in this category the way "unbreakable" is used elsewhere. It is a claim nobody intends you to test. A well-built winder in a quiet bedroom is audible if you listen for it and unnoticeable if you are not thinking about it, and that is the honest description of the best case.
What actually makes a watch winder quiet?
Four things, in roughly this order of importance:
- The motor. This is the largest single factor. A well-made motor with tight tolerances runs smoothly at low speed. A poor one hunts, vibrates and whines. Motor quality is also the part of a winder you cannot see or assess from a photograph.
- The case construction. A rigid, heavy case absorbs vibration. A thin, hollow one behaves like a speaker cabinet and amplifies it. This is why the same motor can sound quite different in two winders.
- The duty cycle. A winder set to a low turns-per-day figure runs for a short time and then rests. A high setting runs the motor far more. Setting the lowest figure that keeps the watch going is the easiest noise reduction available, and it is free.
- How the watch is fitted. A loose watch can rattle against the cushion or the case as the rotor turns. A snug fit removes a noise that has nothing to do with the winder's quality.
Why does Stillwood not publish a decibel figure?
Because we have not measured one on our own samples yet. Measured noise levels and tested turns-per-day figures will be published on the product pages once our own testing is done. We do not quote numbers we have not measured ourselves, and we would rather leave the field blank than fill it with a figure copied from a supplier's brochure.
Decibel claims in this category are worth very little in any case. A figure means nothing without the distance it was taken at, the background level of the room, and whether it was measured while the motor was running or averaged across a cycle that is mostly silence. A winder that rests for most of the day will produce a flattering average and still be the thing you hear at two in the morning.
What we do instead is name the motor where we can. The walnut and Harcourt ranges use a Japanese Mabuchi A+ grade motor with a roller bearing and copper windings, and the Marlow a Mabuchi motor too; on the Hadley and the Belgrave we can only say it is a Japanese motor, and we write that rather than borrow a name. A named component is a checkable fact, which a number without a method behind it is not.
What should I ask before buying a quiet winder?
| Question | What a useful answer looks like |
|---|---|
| What motor does it use? | A named manufacturer, or an honest "we do not know" |
| Has the noise been measured? | A figure with a distance and a method, or a plain no |
| What is the case made of? | A named material — "walnut veneer over an MDF frame" rather than unspecified "wood effect" |
| Does it rest between cycles? | Yes, with adjustable turns per day |
| Is it advertised as completely silent? | Treat an absolute silence claim as a reason to look elsewhere |
How do I make my winder quieter at home?
Placement does more than most people expect, and it costs nothing.
- Do not put it on a hollow surface. A thin shelf or a light chest of drawers acts as a soundboard. A heavy, solid surface does not.
- Put something soft underneath. A felt pad or a folded cloth breaks the path between the case and the furniture.
- Move it out of the bedroom. The simplest fix, and the one people arrive at eventually. A winder does not need to be where you sleep.
- Lower the turns per day. Less running time, less noise, same result if the watch stays wound. Our guide to turns per day explains how to find the lowest workable setting.
- Check the watch is snug on the cushion. Rattle is often mistaken for motor noise.
Does case material affect noise?
Yes, though not in the way the marketing usually implies. Mass and rigidity matter more than the material itself. Our walnut and leather cases are veneer or PU leather over an ABS and MDF frame — not solid timber, and we would rather write that than imply otherwise. What matters for noise is that the frame is dense and properly braced, so it absorbs vibration instead of behaving like a speaker cabinet. A compact case such as the Camborne also has less internal volume for sound to develop in than a six-watch cabinet. The trade-offs between materials are set out in wood, PU leather or glass.
You can see the whole range under watch winders, with the same caveat throughout: quiet is a comparison, not an absolute.
Is a quieter winder worth paying more for?
If it is going in a bedroom or a home office, probably yes. If it is going in a dressing room or a study you use in the daytime, the difference is unlikely to register. Decide where the winder will live before you decide how much noise performance to pay for, and consider whether you need a winder at all first, which is the question in do you actually need a watch winder.
Frequently asked questions
Are watch winders noisy?
A well-built winder is quiet enough to sit in a living room without being noticed, and audible in a silent bedroom if you listen for it. Most of the day it is not running at all, because winders rest between cycles rather than turning continuously.
What is the quietest type of watch winder motor?
Motor quality matters more than motor type. A well-made motor from a known manufacturer running at low speed is quieter than a poorly made one of the same design. Ask which motor a winder uses; a seller who cannot say usually does not know.
Can I put a watch winder in a bedroom?
Yes, and many people do. Place it on a solid surface rather than a hollow shelf, put a soft pad underneath, and use the lowest turns-per-day setting that keeps the watch running. If it still bothers you, move it to another room.
How long does delivery take?
Orders are dispatched within 48 hours and delivered within 5 to 8 business days.
